Welcome to 7th grade science at South Middle School:
We are very excited to have you here with us this school year. We will be following the curriculum set by the Carolina Science STC Series. We will be dividing the topics up in a pace as follows:
- First Quarter: We will use the Energy Forces and Motion text to study forces and Newton's Laws of Motion. The text will be heavily supplemented with a variety of activities and projects, including some student video projects and time allowing, building elastic powered cars.
- Second Quarter: We will use the Energy Forces and Motion text to study various forms of energy and the Law of Conservation of Energy. The text will be heavily supplemented with a variety of activities and projects, including building a Rube Goldberg Machine.
- Third Quarter: We will use the Structure and Function text to study what living things are made of from the parts of a cell up to the systems of the body. The unit will include many opportunities to work with microscopes and focus on the student's ability to make observations and inferences.
- Fourth Quarter: We will use the Weather and Climate Systems text to investigate the difference between weather and climate, and to look at weather as a system. The unit will include a very close look at the supercell storms that frequent the Midwest, and frequently use live data for our lab investigations.
Our YouTube Channel
We will be using a large collection of videos we have produced ourselves to deliver much of the content. Links to these videos will be embedded within the assignments. Some videos are simple instructions to a lab, while others my be elaborate stories that teach a lesson. You are welcome to peruse our video library on our channel: South7thScience.
