How Will I Be Graded?
Assessment is an important tool for providing students with feedback to help them improve, as well as allow parents to monitor their child’s progress. In science classes, students will receive standards based grades for their assignments. Their progress will be reported using grade reports online. This means that most assignments will be evaluated on a 4-point rubric with the following values:
Each assignment will then be attached to the standard that is being taught so that the lower half of the student’s grade report will tell you how your child is progressing in that particular standard. This makes it much easier for the student to identify areas of strength and opportunities for growth.
How do I read the grade report in powerschool?
All grades will be coded in using the above rubric. The following codes will be used:
- MA = Mastery
- PR = Proficient
- DE = Developing
- BE = Beginning
- MI = Missing
- AB = Absent
- Checkmark = Completed, not for a grade.
What letter grade will I get?
Because we will need to also assign a letter grade for the traditional report card, a percentage value must be assigned to these values. The grade percents will be assigned as follows:
100%- Mastery
89%- Proficent
79%- Developing
69%- Beginning
In order to maintain an appropriate balance of scores, the assignments will be assigned to categories. The students will have the opportunity to redo assignments in many of these categories. Each assignment will be of equal value within its category. Categories will have the following weights on the overall grade:
Focus will make up 10% of the grade. These video assignments and readings may be redone up to 6 times as necessary to achieve an acceptable score.
Inquiry will make up 50% of the grade. These labs and investigations may be redone as many times as necessary to achieve an acceptable score. Labs will be used to assess science content and skills.
Reflection will make up 30% of the grade. Quizzes may be redone 2 times, but only during the period they are assigned. These will be assigned at the end of each lesson.
Final Assessments at the end of each quarter will make up 10% of the grade. Assessments will be lab based skills test rather than traditional tests.
